Job Description: Director of Communication

 

Who we are: We are the Southeast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission (SEITC). We are a coalition of 15 federally-recognized Tribes located in southeast Alaska. We were formed in 2014 to provide a unified, focused voice for member Tribes working to protect our way of life from the rapid and massive mining development occurring in the British Columbian headwaters of the transboundary rivers critical to our communities. We are a 501(c) non-profit.

What You’ll Do:  The Director of Communications will be responsible for creating earned media, interacting with the press and keeping social media and our website up to date.  Additionally, SEITC is looking for candidates that have video editing skills and the ability to produce short issue-related videos and interviews and some experience in graphic design. Examples of the work expected would be writing press releases on important milestones related to member Tribes exercising their right to self-determination or posting a story and picture on our social media.

 

Reporting: The Director of Communication will report directly to the Executive Committee but will work closely with the Executive and Assistant Executive Director.

 

Who You Are:  We are looking for a passionate person who can help the organization communicate sometimes complex material to the public and press and help us celebrate our accomplishments. We are seeking someone self-motivated with good writing skills and the ability to produce eye-catching outreach materials, interact with the press, produce short videos and who shares our values of community, forest, salmon and the people who live here.  

 

What Else You Should Know:  SEITC recognizes, supports, and values all forms of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We are an Indigenous organization and do apply a Native preference.

 

Compensation:  The Communication Director position is a contract position and will be responsible for their own taxes and reporting. Compensation is based on a monthly payment of $5000.00 or a 2-week payment of $2500.00 for completing the required services as stipulated in the contract. As such you will set your own work schedule. The Communication Director will be responsible for providing the equipment to conduct the responsibilities. You may be required to attend meetings remotely or timely respond to press inquiries.

 

Where you will work: SEITC is located in southeast Alaska and we prefer someone with knowledge and experience in the region especially in relation to the sovereign Native Tribes. The position itself will be remote. Travel may be required with SEITC paying for travel-related expenses. A qualified candidate should be comfortable traveling in small planes or possibly by boat.

 

Desired Start Date:  Monday, January 2, 2023.

Our goal with the writing and/or video sample is to learn a little bit about how our candidates ability to communicate on topics they care about, so a non-technical writing sample would be preferable, although any writing sample is acceptable.
